Governor Mifflin High School offers a wide variety of school-sponsored clubs and activities to suit various student interests, skills, and schedules. On this page, you will find detailed descriptions of activities, initiatives of each club, and each club advisor. For additional information, please reach out to the club advisor directly.

Student Activity Fees

Governor Mifflin School District has established a one-time fee of $75, which will enable GMMS & GMHS students to participate in an unlimited number of school athletic teams or other co-curricular activities during the school year. Families with multiple children shall pay a maximum of $225 in student activity fees for the school year. Students eligible for free meals through the application process will have the activity fee automatically waived; and others who feel this fee is a financial hardship can call the Business Office to discuss installment payments or a possible reduction in the fee.

Academic Challenge

Advisor: M. KurtzPurpose: Academic Challenge is a BCIU-sponsored interscholastic activity. Teams from Berks County high schools compete against one another in academic competitions in the form of “Team Jeopardy.”Activities: Academic Challenge is a competitive activity, and prospective participants must take a test before joining the group. Academic Challenge competitions occur in the months of November, December, January and February and take place at other schools or colleges during the school day.

ESports Team

Advisor: R. Lapi & Z. Reitnauer (MS)

Purpose: The ESports team was designed to give students a chance to grow as players, students, and citizens. Our goals are to play competitively in the North America Scholastic Esports Federation (NASEF) against other high schools and provide an opportunity for students to compete at some level no matter what level of play they currently have. In addition, to efficiently facilitate our esports team with non playing positions such as: Web Designer, Broadcaster/Commentator, Media Specialist, and more.

Fall Play

Advisor: A. Clark

Purpose: Open to all students, auditions are held in early September for a fall production that may range from a full-length play, to a smaller musical, to a series of one-act plays. Students may participate on-stage as actors or behind-the-scenes as student director, stage manager or crew members. Stage crew activities include the coordination of props, box office operations, costumes, make-up, sets and lights. Participating students can earn quality points toward admission into the International Thespian Society. Actors and crew members rehearse after school until the production in mid-November. Fall Production offers an opportunity to learn basic stage craft, theater technique, character and plot development and to experience the production process. Each play offers 8 – 20 different on-stage roles, with a supporting crew of approximately 40 people backstage.

French Club

Advisor: K. Eagle

Purpose: The aims of these two organizations are: to stimulate interest in the study of French, to create enthusiasm for and an understanding of Francophone culture and civilization, to promote and perpetuate international friendship, and to promote and reward high standards of scholarship. To be a member of the National French Honor Society, you must be an active member of the French Club.Activities: May include the Boules Tournament, Mille Bornes Tournament, croissant breakfast, French dinner, movie night, café night, trip to New York, cooking school trip, Cirque du Soleil trip, dinner at a French restaurant, celebration of National French Week, fencing demonstration and lesson and Mardi Gras dessert fete.

Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA)

Advisor: K. Wilbert

Purpose: FBLA is the largest career student business organization in the world with over 189,300 high school members. Students have an opportunity to participate in Regional, State, and National competitions, leadership workshops, service projects, and social events. There are many opportunities to network with business entrepreneurs and local organizations. All activities help build leadership skills and business knowledge necessary to excel in any career.Activities: All members have the opportunity to attend the annual Leadership Workshop in Berks County and Regional Leadership Competition at Kutztown University. Other events will occur throughout the year.

Meetings: Every month, there will be one mandatory meeting that will occur during the WIN period on the 3rd Wednesday of the month.

Purpose: The purpose of our club is to explore Spanish language and culture through activities and traditions practiced in Spanish-speaking countries.Activities: Day of the Dead gathering to make sugar skulls; Explore culture and language through movie viewing Re-create “12 Grapes at Midnight;” New Year’s Eve tradition from Spain; Make traditional meals from Dominican Republic

Spring Swing

Advisor: A. ClarkPurpose: The Spring Swing is a musical theatre production that is open to all high school students. Vocal, dance, and reading auditions are held the second week of December. Rehearsal schedules are detailed and occur after school through March, with the performances at the end of March. Students can participate as actors, singers, dancers, orchestra members, stage crew, box office attendants, ushers, stage manager and student director. Experienced performers and stage crew are asked to take on more responsibilities while novice participants can develop their acting and stage craft skills in a hands-on setting. Approximately 50 to 60 students appear on stage, supported by another 50 students backstage and in the pit, and participating students can earn quality points toward admission to the International Thespian Society.

Aevidum

Advisor: N. HertzogPurpose: The word Aevidum, which means “I’ve got your back,” was created by students at Cocalico High School after they lost a classmate to suicide. What started in one tiny school in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania has now become a nationwide movement. Aevidum Club at GMHS is here to spread positive messages and provide support to students.

Activities: Hanging up posters with positive messages, Morning shout-outs, Student support groups, Students helping students (Training, etc.), Inspirational Social Media accounts…Among other things!

Archive (Yearbook)

Advisor: A. McKayPurpose: This club provides students with the opportunity to learn all aspects of producing a full-color high school yearbook.Activities: Weekly staff meetings focus on photography, writing, page layout and graphic design. All members are a vital part of the yearbook process, including conducting sales and organizing club activities. Members meet regularly during and after school to design, write, produce and edit the book on professional graphic design software.

Art Club

Purpose: To explore various art media; to promote and share art within the community and share your passion with other young artists like yourself.Activities: Homecoming, Souper Bowl for Opportunity House, murals, holiday card creation for Mifflin Court residents, Nature of Nolde trip and contest, shared arts and crafts instruction by peers, individual creation time, etc.

AV Club

Advisor: J. Cusano

Purpose: The AV Club serves as a focus group for students interested in digital communications, as well as assisting the District and the GM Communications & Community Relations department in maintaining video documentation of school events.Activities: Video record concerts and other school events, work towards improving and updating school video technology, create video clips to be used in the yearbook and carry out other miscellaneous audio/video needs.

Purpose: Most GMbassadors are recommended by the Middle School Ambassador Program, but new students may apply. They must attend a three-hour training session outside of school hours, maintain a 3.0 GPA, be involved in school, and have good behavior. They should be positive, friendly, outgoing, confident, caring, knowledgeable of the building, assertive, trustworthy, empathetic and good leaders.Activities: Giving tours of the school, escorting new students to and from class, organizing and attending social events for new students, helping with PowerSchool, and being mentors by offering tips and advice.

International Thespian Society

Advisor: J. Cusano

Purpose: The International Thespian Society is an honor society that recognizes excellence in High School Theatre. You become a member by participating in our theatrical productions. Participants earn points for every task they complete. Points are accrued toward membership induction. Members have the opportunity to be elected to the student leadership board, which consists of 8 Student Leaders of the theatre department and specific areas of the department. Scholarships and other opportunities are available through the ITS.

Activities: All GMHS theatrical events.

Meetings: Meetings are generally 1 Sunday afternoon per month.

It's Our World, Too (IOWT)

Key Club

Advisor: B, Selbst

Purpose: We are Mifflin’s largest service club, helping our school and community, while having loads of fun!Activities: Recycling, food bank, Giving Garden, Special Olympics, blood drives, Halloween party, activities with children and the elderly, Animal Rescue League, work with the homeless, and many other volunteer efforts.

Meetings: We meet Wednesday mornings and afternoons, alternating most weeks. Schedules are posted via the Google Classroom

Mifflin Martial Arts

Advisor: N. Verbeke
Purpose: This club meets weekly to practice a variety of self-defense and martial arts techniques based on Tang Soo Do (Korean Karate), Muay Thai (Kickboxing), and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. This is a great opportunity for anybody interested in a fun and unique form of exercise which also equips you with practical self-defense skills. This club is also ideal for athletes that are interested in improving their flexibility and agility.

National Honor Society (NHS)

Advisor: M. Belinski
Purpose: Juniors and seniors who demonstrate academic excellence and earn a cumulative GPA of 3.67 or higher will be invited to join the Governor Mifflin Chapter of the National Honor Society in the spring of the academic year. Membership invitations are evaluated on a yearly basis following the close of the second quarter, so a student not invited to join NHS in their junior year may still receive an invitation their senior year if eligible.

Reading Olympics

Advisor: A. Messina

Purpose: Enjoy reading and discussing books throughout the year. Participate in a friendly competition against other schools in the Spring where teams work together to answer questions about the books

Activities: Some activities the Reading Olympics club has participated in are Teen Library day at Kutztown University, author visits, small fundraisers, and the annual Reading Olympics competition.

Meeting Schedule: Reading Olympics will meet on the 3rd Wednesday of each month

Service Learning Project

Advisor: B. Selbst

Purpose: Our club serves the community and larger areas while learning about pertinent issues that affect our society. Through hands-on work, students gain an appreciation for service and the world around them.Activities: Our three main projects include the Halloween party for local children, the Homeless Sleep-out in February, and the Service Learning Trip. Once a year students and staff travel to unique American communities to provide service and learn about the culture. these trip occur during the summer or breaks from school, but take months to plan and coordinate. Previous places we visited include the Navajo Nation in Arizona, Best Friends Animal Sanctuary in Utah, Cheyenne River Reservation in South Dakota, the Sea Islands of South Carolina, Appalachia communities, horse-rescue farms, environmental areas on the Atlantic coast, and Habitat for Humanity organizations around the country.

Meetings: Meetings occur as we plan for the projects. Students may see the adviser for information.

Stage Crew

Advisor: J. Cusano

Purpose: Stage Crew is responsible for all the Set, Staging, Props, Costumes, Makeup/Hair, Lighting, Sound, Special Effects, Ticketing, and Front of House elements of all GMHS theatrical productions, and all other events taking place in the auditorium.

Activities: Fall Production; Spring Swing musical; All concerts, assemblies, and events that take place in the auditorium.

Meetings: Meets 2 weeknights, Either Monday/Wednesday or Tuesday/Thursday, and some Saturdays. Schedule depends on many other activities sharing the space. Those members who are on a show run crew, will need to attend all technical and dress rehearsals leading up to the performances. Schedules are available on Google Classroom.

Student Government Association (SGA)

Advisor: K. Redford

Purpose: The student government is an elected body of representatives of the entire student population. SGA is the voice of the student body to the administration and faculty. Its purpose is to unify the student body, meet the needs of students and to provide an outlet for student ideas. The club plans social, cultural and community programs designed to grow a sense of community in our school. The club also organizes and arranges school activities for the students and staff.Activities: Homecoming activities, mini-THON, community service projects, spirit activities, assembly programs, teacher appreciation days, dances, and leadership training.

Volunteen

Advisor: B. Selbst

Purpose: Students may spend their study hall periods (at least one per cycle) volunteering either at Immanuel Church’s day care with the children or in the Special Education classrooms at the high school with students with special needs.

Activities: There is a brief meeting early in the year and then monthly paperwork to complete to document your time spent volunteering. Students may sign up at any point, but they should be doing well in their classes to be able to miss study hall periods.
