GMHS Clubs and Organizations

Academic Challenge

Purpose: The purpose of the Governor Mifflin Academic Challenge club is to compete against other high schools in Berks County once a month answering questions in a times competition in the four major subject areas. By winning the county championship we can attend the state competition.

Meeting Days/Times/Locations: Meetings are held every second and fourth Tuesday of the month to practice in room 118.

After School Basketball Club

Purpose: The purpose of the After School Basketball Club is to get together with other students from the school to work together as a team or group and enjoy a game of basketball! There are positive experiences that sports, in this case basketball bring to your life. It helps with physical activities, participation, sportsmanlike conduct, and interpersonal skills with others. This club is a fun way to get together with your friends to play some basketball and have a fun time!

Purpose: The purpose of the Governor Mifflin Chess Club is to provide students with an atmosphere where all students can have fun together and play chess. We have friendly competitions where students of all skill levels can improve their chess abilities, build lasting friendships, and enjoy the intellectual challenge of the game. The top seven players will hold competitions with other schools across the county for the county championship.

Meeting Days/Times/Locations: We will hold our meetings every second and third Tuesday of each month. We play immediately after school at room 113.

Purpose: Concert choir is a co-curricular class with outside performances. There are three groups branched from the concert choir, they are Governors, New Arrangement and Ambassadors.

Meeting Days/Times/Locations: Outside of the school day, Students are encouraged to try out for the Junior County Festival (7th, 8th and 9th graders), Senior County Chorus (10th and up), as well as District Chorus (10th and up)!

Purpose: Students in this club learn how to operate all aspects of a coffee shop including marketing, finance, and inventory management. Students engage with local business leaders and community members through events outside of Governor Mifflin High School. This is a club open to seniors who have taken the pre-requisite business courses.

ESports Team

Purpose: The eSports team was designed to give students a chance to grow as players, students, and citizens. Our goals are to play competitively in the North America Scholastic Esports Federation (NASEF) against other high schools and provide an opportunity for students to compete at some level no matter what level of play they currently have. In addition, to efficiently facilitate our esports team with non playing positions such as: Web Designer, Broadcaster/Commentator, Media Specialist, and more.

Fall Play

Purpose: The fall shows are always a fun way to try out theater and get out of your comfort zone and create great memories and friends! The fall shows are strictly just acting, with usually no singing or dancing involved! The 2024 fall play is, Almost, Maine by John Cariani. Originally written in 2004, but has been revised several times Focuses on the people of a fictional town called Almost, Maine, and their various interactions

Fellowship of Christian Athletes

French Club

Purpose: Bonjour everyone! Do you want to learn more about French culture or speak the language? Or just want to try some sweets? Then come on down to French Club! Where you can participate in games, activities, working on artwork, and even prepare and taste French cuisine!

Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA)

Purpose: FBLA is the largest career student business organization in the world with over 189,300 high school members. Students have an opportunity to participate in Regional, State, and National competitions, leadership workshops, service projects, and social events. There are many opportunities to network with business entrepreneurs and local organizations. All activities help build leadership skills and business knowledge necessary to excel in any career.

Gay Straight Alliance Club (GSA)

Purpose: The purpose of this club is to provide a safe place for people of all sexualities and gender identities and to educate students about LGBT issues while promoting acceptance of everyone in the school community.

GMBassadors

GM Environmental Club

Advisor: J. Stinson

Purpose: This environmentally-friendly club dedicates itself to serving our community, protecting our natural resources and providing opportunities to socialize with fellow students. We help to maintain the Governor Mifflin Giving Garden, which consists of eight raised beds. The produce grown is donated to local homeless shelters. Some of the other activities we enjoy are hiking, stream testing, school recycling and teaching about environmental topics at local festivals.

Purpose: Travel club is ALL about traveling! Each summer there is a new location picked for students to travel to. We immerse ourselves into the culture, history and some tourist attractions.

Purpose: This club meets weekly to practice a variety of self-defense and martial arts techniques based on Tang Soo Do (Korean Karate), Muay Thai (Kickboxing), and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. This is a great opportunity for anyone interested in a fun and unique form of exercise that also equips you with practical self-defense skills.

Morgan's Message

Purpose: Morgan’s Message® strives to eliminate the stigma surrounding mental health within the student-athlete community and equalize the treatment of physical and mental health in athletics. We aim to expand the dialogue on mental health by normalizing conversations, empowering those who suffer in silence, and supporting those who feel alone. Purpose: Orchestra is for students who play/students who are interested in string instruments (Violin, Viola, Cello, Double Bass) The Orchestra performs at 3 concerts throughout the year.

Meeting Days/Times/Locations: Orchestra is a scheduled co-curricular class during 1st Block and counts for 1 credit. Students can also audition for county and district music festivals!

PJAS Science Fair

Purpose: A statewide competition for student-led scientific research. Students conduct experiments or research in various fields and present at competitions. Open to all students interested in science.

Meeting Days/Times/Locations: Advisor will be available to meet with students by appointment on their projects weekly from 2:30pm-8:00pm. Meeting will be arranged by Goggle Meet.

Purpose: It is experiential learning with volunteering in specific remote American communities. We take a yearly summer trip to different states and do historical and cultural sightseeing along with volunteer work throughout the days of the trip.

Ski Club

Purpose: The purpose of the Ski and Snowboard Club is to introduce skiing and snowboarding as a healthy and enjoyable recreational activity for beginning members, and to help more experienced members continue their pursuit of skiing and snowboarding as a sport. As a club we travel weekly to Blue Mountain and then end our season with a long weekend trip to Jay Peak Vermont.

Spring Swing

Purpose: The 2025 Spring Musical is AIDA: Music by Elton John, Lyrics by Tim Rice. An epic tale of love, loyalty and betrayal, chronicling the love triangle between Aida, a Nubian princess stolen from her country, Amneris, an Egyptian princess, and Radames, the soldier they both love. Gorgeous ballads, Big choral numbers, and opportunities for dancers of all skill levels. The musicals are an amazing way of getting deeply involved in theater! It is very fun and rehearsals are always very active. The musicals are more popular and with Aida we would love a big cast so look out for audition information later this Fall!

Statesmen Jazz Band

Student Government Association (SGA)

Purpose: The purpose of SGA is to provide Governor Mifflin High School with the best possible memories and adventures possible! We do this by giving back to our community, raising money for pediatric cancer through Mini-THON and Four Diamonds, and building school spirit. Some events that we host are: Homecoming, Mini-THON, Powderpuff, and more!

Meeting Days/Times/Locations: Meetings will be in the cafeteria on Sundays at 7pm on 9/8, 9/29, 11/10, 12/18, 1/12, 2/9, 3/2, 3/9, 3/16, 3/23, and 5/4

Tests of Engineering, Aptitude, Mathematics and Science (TEAMS)

Purpose: A national competition focused on solving real-world engineering challenges. TEAMS = Tests of Engineering Aptitude, Mathematics, & Science. Collaborate in teams to solve math and engineering problems through hands-on projects and exams

Threads of Success

Purpose: A student-run organization that has created a safe space for students with necessities and opportunities to better themselves and the community. We hope to become a tight-woven group where we can all collaborate and share new ideas and campaigns for the benefit of Threads!

Unified Mustangs

Purpose: In partnership with Special Olympics Pennsylvania Unified Champion Schools, Unified Mustangs is a unified club which seeks to create enriching and inclusive school climates through sports and youth leadership. Students with and without disabilities take on co-leadership roles and collaborate to improve the school culture by creating whole school engagement activities designed to promote inclusion, acceptance, and respect for all students. Unified Mustangs will also look for opportunities to support our Unified Sports Teams.

Meeting Days/Times/Locations: Once a month, block 7 for students who have study hall...meeting will also be help on the fourth Wednesday of each month.

World Quest Club

Purpose: The purpose of the Governor Mifflin World Quest Club is to sometimes participate in monthly meetings in junction with the Berks County World Affairs Council who brings in world class speakers that are fluent in significant current affairs. The club exists to help students navigate the complexities of the modern world. The culminating competition pits our teams against other schools in Berks County answering questions related to current events. We have won the competition twice and could then attend the national competition in Washington DC.

About Student Activity Fees

About Student Activity Fees

In accordance with school policy, the Governor Mifflin School District has established a Student Activity Fee. The purpose of this fee is to offset costs associated with Governor Mifflin’s extracurricular programs. A one-time fee of $75 will enable each Grade 7-12 student to participate in an unlimited number of school athletic teams or other co-curricular activities during the school year. Families with multiple children shall pay a maximum of $225 in student activity fees for the school year. Students eligible for free meals through the application process will have the activity fee automatically waived; and, others who feel this fee is a financial hardship can call the Business Office to discuss installment payments. The fee is due by the following dates: ]

Fall Sports/Marching Band: Wednesday, September 25, 2024
Co-curricular Clubs: Wednesday, December 18, 2024
Winter Sports: Wednesday, January 15, 2025
Spring Sports: Wednesday, April 16, 2025

If payment is not received by the due date indicated above, the student will not be eligible to participate on the appropriate athletic team or co-curricular club until payment is made.

Online payment using a credit card (SchoolPay)
a. You may access SchoolPay by visiting gmsd.org/schoolpay. A link to SchoolPay is also available on the GMHS homepage and in our website footer. The fee will not show up as an option until the student is flagged as participating in a chargeable activity. For sports that will be after the first two weeks of practice and for clubs that will be after the first couple of weeks of school.
Check -- Please write the student's name, grade and activity on your check and make the check payable to "Governor Mifflin School District."
Cash

Cash and check payments may be dropped off at the Education Center, the high school main office, the middle school main office or the athletic director’s office. The activity fee applies only to certain co-curricular activities. Students who participate in any of the following are required to pay the student activity fee:

Refunds will be granted if payment has been made, but the student does not make an athletic team or does not participate in three or more co-curricular activity meetings/events. All refund requests must be made by contacting the Business Office. Refund requests must be made in the same school year they are paid to be granted.
